Garnet

GarnetGarnets are the birthstone of those born in January, and are invariably thought of as a deep red wine colour gemstone. In fact garnets are a very large group of gemstones occurring in numerous colours, ranging from deep red (pyrope) pinky-violet (Almandine), gold and orange (Spessartite and Hessonite) bright green (Tsavorite), and the rarest and most valuable, the brilliant moss green garnet from Russia (Demantoid).

Garnet takes its name from the Latin for "Grain" as the rounded crystals of the rough stones resemble the red kernels of the Pomegranate.
