White, cream, and gold South Sea pearls are cultured in Pinctada Maxima oysters around Western Australia and Indonesia. High-quality Tahitian and South Sea pearls are among the world’s most valuable pearls.

Japan pioneered the cultured pearl industry in the 1930s with traditional Akoya pearls, replacing the natural pearl trade. Akoya pearls are cultivated by inserting a round bead into the oyster, allowing layers of nacre to form around it and create a perfectly round pearl.

During the 1970s, China developed a pearl industry to rival traditional Japan methods and now produces some of the finest cultured freshwater pearls available. These pearls are grown in mussels without a central bead and range from tiny seed pearls to 12mm in size. Available in round, rice-shaped, and freeform styles, top-quality freshwater pearls are prized for their lustre and surface quality.
