Opal
Opal, the birthstone for October, is a unique stone made of hardened silica gel, known for its colourful flashes that appear against a black or white base. While Australia is known for producing the finest opals, they’re also found in the Americas and Ethiopia, making them a beautiful choice for bespoke jewellery.

The History of Opal
Opal has captivated cultures with its shifting play of colour since ancient times. The Romans admired it for combining the qualities of many gemstones into one, while later European societies saw it as a symbol of creativity. Its natural variation ensures no two pieces feel the same.

Natural Origins & Characteristics
Opal forms when silica-rich water settles into cracks and cavities within rock, gradually solidifying over time. Its play of colour comes from the way light interacts with tiny silica spheres inside the stone. Australia remains the leading source, with Ethiopia and Mexico also producing notable opals.

Opal by Cellini
Opals are chosen for their movement of colour and individuality. Because every opal behaves differently in light, each design is shaped around the stone itself. This approach allows the opal’s natural character to take centre stage. At Cellini, only Australian opals are stocked, selected for their more stable properties.
Care & Craftsmanship
Opal ranks 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale and requires gentle handling. It should be kept away from heat, chemicals, and impact. Cellini craftsmanship focuses on secure, protective designs that help preserve the stone over time.
