Hallmarking & Certification

Hallmarking is a vital part of fine jewellery, offering reassurance, transparency, and lasting value. At our Cambridge-based workshop, we take hallmarking and certification seriously, ensuring every precious metal piece meets the highest legal and quality standards. This page explains what hallmarking is, why it matters, and how it protects you as a customer.

What Is Hallmarking?

Hallmarking is the official process of testing and marking precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and palladium to verify their purity. In the UK, hallmarking is a legal requirement for most precious metal items above a certain weight. Each hallmark is applied by an independent Assay Office and consists of a series of symbols that confirm the metal type, purity, and origin of testing. These marks provide a trusted guarantee that your jewellery is exactly what it claims to be.

The Importance of Hallmarking

Hallmarking is more than a legal obligation. it is a mark of trust, quality, and craftsmanship.

Legal Assurance

Hallmarking ensures your jewellery complies with UK law, protecting consumers from misleading or inaccurate metal claims.

Verified Purity

Independent testing confirms the precise metal content, giving you confidence in the value and authenticity of your piece.

Long-Term Value

Hallmarked jewellery retains its credibility over time, which is especially important for insurance, resale, or inheritance.

Craftsmanship & Integrity

A hallmark reflects a jeweller’s commitment to quality, transparency, and ethical standards.

Understanding UK Hallmarks

UK hallmarks are made up of several distinct symbols, each with a specific meaning. Together, they tell the complete story of your jewellery.

The metal fineness mark indicates purity, such as 925 for sterling silver or 750 for 18ct gold.

The metal type symbol identifies whether the piece is gold, silver, platinum, or palladium.

The Assay Office mark shows where the item was tested and hallmarked.

The sponsor’s or maker’s mark identifies the registered jeweller responsible for the piece.

Optional date letters may indicate the year the hallmark was applied.

The Hallmarking Process

Design & Creation

Each piece is carefully crafted in our workshop, with metal choice and weight considered from the outset.

Independent Testing

The jewellery is sent to a UK Assay Office, where it is tested to verify metal purity.

Official Marking

Once approved, the appropriate hallmarks are applied using traditional or laser methods.

Final Inspection

The finished piece is checked to ensure the hallmark is clear, accurate, and discreetly placed.

Once complete, your jewellery is returned ready to wear, gift, or cherish.
